Clinical Studies
A clinical trial where older adults were given 50mg of epicatechin per day found that the follistatin/myostatin ratio increased 49% after only 7 days of supplementation. Another clinical trial found that 200mg of epicatechin per day improved endurance and prevented muscular fatigue by inhibiting the aerobic and mitochondrial succinate dehydrogenase adaptations that occur during exercise. Animal studies support these finds. Epicatechin given to mice decreased myostatin by 18% and increased follistatin by 56%.New research is looking at epicatechin as a way to prevent sarcopenia, a loss of muscle associated with age. In elderly human subjects, levels of myostatin decreased 28%, while follistatin increased 30% after only 7 days of treatment with epicatechin. Treatment with epicatechin also yielded a 7% increase in muscular strength.
